Montessori Activity Today: Cutting Fruit (Bananas & Strawberries Optional)
Recommended age: From 2 years old and up (older kids love this too!)
Cutting fruit might look like a simple task, but it’s actually a fantastic way to develop your child’s motor skills and independence — plus, it’s a tasty, healthy treat!
Why this activity works:
Builds hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills through safe cutting
Encourages kids to take charge of preparing their own snack
Introduces healthy eating habits and awareness of different fruits
What you’ll need:
Bananas (peeled together)
Optional strawberries (washed and dried)
Age-appropriate knife (plastic or rounded tip recommended)
Cutting board and a clean plate
How to do it:
-
Create a calm, safe space for your child to work. Explain the plan clearly: “We’re going to slice bananas carefully to make a yummy snack.”
-
Demonstrate how to hold the banana and cut safely, highlighting finger placement to avoid accidents.
-
Let your child watch you cut a sample slice and encourage them to ask questions.
-
Supervise closely as they try cutting themselves—offer help only when needed.
-
When your child feels ready, encourage independent cutting with your support nearby.
Bonus idea: Make simple fruit skewers by threading the banana and strawberry pieces onto sticks — a fun way to enjoy the fruit together!
This activity is a wonderful example of Montessori’s hands-on learning: it’s self-correcting, sensory-rich, and encourages children to explore at their own pace.
