How to Turn Sorting Clothes into a Montessori Activity for Kids (Ages 3-6)
Want to turn an everyday chore into a meaningful Montessori activity that helps your child build independence, focus, and practical skills? Today, I’m sharing a simple and useful activity: sorting clothes with your kids!
Chances are, you have clothes at home that no longer fit your little ones (they grow so fast!). This is the perfect opportunity to work together on a practical life skill while keeping your home tidy.
Why is this activity so valuable?
Improves hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills
Encourages independence and responsibility
Builds a sense of organization and classification, key skills for future learning
What you’ll need:
Various clothing items: socks, t-shirts, pants, etc.
Boxes or baskets labeled with pictures or words showing what goes in each (e.g., one for socks, one for t-shirts)
How to do it:
-
Set up the boxes at a height your child can easily reach.
-
Explain the activity: you’ll be sorting clothes together.
-
Show each item, talk about its color, texture, and help your child place it in the right box.
-
Encourage your child to sort independently, stepping in gently only when needed.
-
Afterward, chat about what you did and praise their effort.
Besides practicing useful skills, this activity creates a special bonding moment, turning a household chore into an educational game.
If you try it, I’d love to hear how it went!
